| EOS 1000FN fitted with modified BP-50 grip and Split-image screenContents
From: Julian Loke DisclaimerFirstly a disclaimer. The modification is not for the faint hearted, and requires competence with hacksaw, soldering iron, and #00 screwdriver. I provide this information for your entertainment only, and I will not be responsible for any damage or loss of warranty to your equipment. Attempt this at your own risk. IntroductionThe BP-50 can be used in four configurations with the EOS 1000FN / Rebel SII, with increasing levels of modification. 1) Grip Extender (with Tripod socket)Use a hacksaw to remove the battery connector on the BP-50. It will now fit nicely on the bottom of the EOS 1000FN. This is similar to the use of a GR-70, except that you also get an additional tripod socket on the BP-50. 2) Grip Extender with 4 AA or 2CR5 PowerI soldered some wires to a dismanted 2CR5 battery shell and connected the other end to the switch of the BP-50, making sure of the correct polarity. Wire from cheap walkman-type headphones seems to work here. I use a battery of rechargable 1300mAh NiMH AA cells, and keep a spare 2CR5 in my camera bag. 3) Grip Extender with Power and Auxiliary releaseThis requires dimantling the EOS 1000FN and soldering wires to the main shutter release circuit board. Sufficient length of the wires are led out through the battery compartment and soldered into the BP-50 release. 4) Grip Extender with Power, Auxiliary release and Remote socket
I next drilled a hole in the BP-50 and installed a 2.5mm socket connected to the shutter release circuit. I can now use a RS60-E3 for remote shutter
release. Dave Hersztein had done a similar thing for his GR10-L, see: | ||||||||||

v0.3b2002Sep02 jul: minor reformat CommentsUsefull and informative site, espesially the part about modifying the canon eos 1000fn. Unfortunately, no pictures are shown fro circuitbard modification for external shutter release.regards, WOuter Vroegop The Netherlands Wouter 25/03/2002 12:52:02 Thanks Julian, now it's really usefull.. :-) Wouter Vroegop 27/03/2002 06:42:52 Many moons ago I modified my 1000 for remote release using a reed switch. This means you can hit the release with a magnet for shake free exposures or use an electromagnet for remote release. One point on my 1000 I needed two diodes as well as the reed switch, because it needed both contacts closing (pre release ans full release). I'm glad to fing some other loony willing to take their camera appart too. Huw 06/05/2002 14:42:11 Can you use this method with a canon eos 100 ( Elan), please Regards Colin Sloanes colin sloanes 11/5/2002 10:58:24 PM No Julian Loke 11/24/2002 11:59:18 PM Why do you think this wouldnt work with EOS Elan / EOS 100 ? In my opinion it must work, since the stupid GR 70 grip extender (without BP or tripod socket) fits both EOS 100 and EOS 1000 - so also this BP 50 MUST fit both if it fits EOS 1000. Have you actually tried to mount the BP 50 adapted to version 1 (as a vertical grip) to the EOS 100? At the moment I am about to buy a EOS 100 - but the absence of a BP worries me. I was thinking about adapting BP-8 (the chepest one for EOS cameras like EOS 500, 3000) to fit EOS 100, but Im still just thinking about it. I havent had my camera (EOS 3000N) disassembled yet, so I m a bit frightened if I can put it back together again... spyderman 9/23/2003 8:05:31 PM The EOS 100 baseplate is longer than then EOS 1000. It will fit the flat top of the GR-70, but will not sit flush against the raised edge of the BP-50, unless you sand down the battery compartment cover. Julian Loke 10/11/2003 11:46:19 AM Here you have made a fine series of pictures on how to dismantle a canon 1000F. I need to reach the shutter curtains, so that I can clean them. If anyone has pictures on how to, or any other guidens on how to dismantle all the way to the shutter curtens, please let me know. Palle 6/4/2004 12:08:12 AM I have just done a great thing to my EOS 100/Elan : I adapted a BP 300 (for EOS 30/33/Elan7) to fit my Elan. All buttons work (shutter release + AEL) and I also added a remote release socket (as you recommended in this article). Now my old Elan looks like a EOS 1 pro-body :) I will try to post describtion and also pictures of it on my personal website to help the owners of Elan who also miss the ability to use AA cells, vertical grip and remote release socket... spyderman 7/31/2004 12:31:31 PM ******************************************************** Hi all, I have just added the pictures of EOS Elan with BP-300 as I promised (though a bit later) http://spyderman.ekodapo.sk/?s=t&p=15 ******************************************************** (to email me remove the spam. from my e-mail address) Spyderman 4/23/2005 4:44:37 PM I had done a similar modification in my EOS 1000, based in this tutorial, but without the battery pack. I made a hole in the right side of the lens mount and passed the wires near by the flash (on the top of the camera). In the hole, connected to the wires, I had put a mini socket connection, to allow the connection of the wired remote control. Thank you Julian Loke, for sharing this tutorial. Gustavo 2005Aug02 05:07:22 -0700 quiero el grip para mi camara 1000 qd alguien me lo puede mandar diego 2006Oct17 06:52:13 -1000 rmlyefhm http://elpywqdd.com koryqxkq fnjoorxa fpegvhef fprvwegl yvrvwnut 2007Oct17 21:14:23 -1000 regarding the rebel to bp-50 hack.i stumbled on it while looking for info on an ef-m i found and purchased,(an odd canon)on my way to unique or rare canon collecting.being a tinkerer,i went one better and modified the bp-50 to fit the ef-m/rebel body. this required severing the probe that enters the camera on the elan and remounting it on the bp-50 almost 180 degrees out, then rewireing the batterypack to use an installed t3 socket. i then modified the ef-m to have contacts inside the battery well which would provide preview(autofocus with rebel but just exposure set for the ef-m)and shutter release. long story short, the modified bp-50 installs and removes exactly the same way as it would on the elan. the combination of the ef-m and the bp-50 work the same as a standard canon option.the shutter buttons(camera and bp-50)first and second press contacts work, vertical slide switch also controls the t3 socket. what i'm trying to say is that i had a lot of fun making this thing work and i thank you for the inspiration. it's not hacking it's learning. P.S. I will be posting the EF-M and BP-50 with flash and 35-70 ef lens on ebay soon.not for profit just to see if anyone appreciates something different. THANKS GUYS. james 2010Mar17 17:47:37 -1000 Hi, I have problem. I made connection to release shutter, but it doesn't work. I link this two wire, and nothing. Could You help?
