Naming Conventions

Why are there different names for the same camera?

Other resources: Canon Camera Museum
Photozone
Canon has given many of their models different names in different world markets. This can be for many reasons, some of which are speculated to be:
  • In some countries, certain numbers are considered "unlucky" or to have less than desirable associations.
  • Market research indicates that in some countries models with a name rather than a number are considered more likely to succeed.
  • To differentiate between models with minor specification differences (due to either patents or market forces). Some examples are:
    • EOS 5 and A2e- these have slight functional differences due to patent reasons
    • EOS 50e and 55, where the 55 includes a panorama back, which is an option highly desirable for the Japanese domestic market, but not found in any other world market.
  • Limiting (or at least highlighting) "grey" imports into some countries due to model name differences. This is a policy not restricted to Canon- most of the other major manufacturers do the same thing.

Is there any pattern to naming methods?

The short answer is yes and no, as you can see when you browse through the table below.

At first glance, naming is simple. Digital cameras are named with a suffix "D" or a prefix "Digital"; or even Kodak "DCS" (Kodak Digital Camera System). "E" was used to indicate a model with multiple autofocus sensors using optional "Eye Control AF" infrared gaze detector to select between the multiple sensors. Where camera models were sold as variants with or without a built-in flash, the models with the flash had names containing a letter "S", possibly indicating "Strobe". Confusingly, "s" was also applied to the "EOS 7s" as the successor to the "EOS 7", both models sold in Japan, as well as to the EOS 1Ds (studio) version of the EOS 1D, where the "studio" version had higher resolution, but slower continuous shooting frame-per-minute rate.

Then, the Pro level cameras are all called EOS 1x (EOS 1, EOS 1N, EOS 1v, EOS 1N/RS or other variants). The semi-professional models have numbers starting with 10 or lower, and the further you move in the spectrum from professional to consumer the more zeros there are on the end of the model number. e.g. EOS 3, 30, 300 and 3000 are all models current in 2001. They range from the semi-professional EOS 3 down to the EOS 3000 which is not available in all world markets, but is definitely a consumer oriented camera.

Versions with "names" rather than model numbers usually carry the name through to successive (or next generation) models in the range. An example is the progression: Elan, Elan II, Elan 7, and Elan 7N.

Beyond this, naming seems to be a marketing decision, because there are so many exceptions to the general pattern that the game of "guess the next model name" has become quite popular and the results are often not what were expected. For example what became of the Elans 3 to 6 and where did the name for EOS A2/A2e come from?

Modifiers such as "Mark II", "II", "New", "N", "X" or "V" are sometimes appended to new replacement of a successful camera model. The use of these modifiers is not always consistent with the changes in the new model being just minor revisions. The EOS Elan was replaced by the EOS Elan II, which had major revisions in several camera features.

In some cases, a new model receives a completely new name, even though it shares almost identical features with a differently named body. One example is the replacement of the EOS 20D with the EOS 30D.

Naming conventions used in this document.

For the purposes of consistency, the model naming used in this document will be Americas / Other / Japan. In other words, if a camera is introduced, the Americas model designation will be listed first, followed by the worldwide market name and finally the Japanese market domestic name (e.g., EOS Elan IIE / EOS 50E / EOS 55). Refer to the table.

It would be good to make also such timelined series of EOS bodies like: 750/850-650-620 700-600/RT-1 1000-100-10-1 5000-500-50-5-1N 3000-300-30-3-1V Some tables containing basic specs are already available at www.photozone.de

v0.11b now fits 640 width. Includes APS, Digital bodies, & colour variants.
Julian Loke 03/05/2001 13:00:38

There is the mistake that EOS 650 was "value" and EOS 620 was "mid" in 1987. EOS 650 was definitely "mid" and EOS 620 was "high" or even "top"
Yuri 20/05/2001 10:00:14

I think 620 should be considered high. There are a couple of reasons. First, 630 which is considered here as high was out to replace 620 according to Canon Museum. Also, 620's 1/250 high sync speed (EOS 3 only has 1/200 sync speed!)should qualify it as high not to mention its relatively high shutter speed at the time.
Gary Lim 22/05/2001 01:39:59

Like some others, I think you rank the 620/650 much too low. You need to rank these cameras based on the competition of their day, not based on the features of cameras that came later.I think you also separate them by too much. Except for max shutter and sync speeds, the cameras were essentially identical. As a preface, let me note that I was there, buying one of the first 650s in the U.S. to experiment with, later upgrading to a 620, and some years later owning a 630. Both the 620 and 650 were very feature laden for the day: P,TV, AV and M modes in one camera was impressive. The flash metering was state of the art. The multi-segment meter was state-of-the-art compared to anything but the T90. Both were built with rugged, metal chassis. And they were clearly marketed toward advanced amateurs, not shapshooters. I knew a number of pros who worked with the 620. It certainly wasn't a replacement for their F-1s or Nikons, but it was a useful adjunct. Compared to it's competition, and to the cameras that immediately followed (the 750/850), I'd put the 620 in the High Category. If you compare it to Canon's MF line, the only bodies that exceeded it in features and construction were the F-1 and T90, both of which were pro, or Top, level cameras. And you've definitely reversed the 750/850 and 620. Remember that EOS numbering (generallly) has the higher numbered cameras lower in the line (650 lower than 620, 3000 lower than 300 which is lower than 30). The 750 and 850 were distinctly lower in price and quality than the 650. The 650 had virtually the same feature set, and the same construction as the 620. The 750/850, had all plastic construction, fewer features and simplified operation. I don't remember all the specifics, but the 850, and maybe the 750 were program mode only. Neither of them had a full manual mode. THESE cameras were the pre-cursors to the Rebel and 3000 lines. No way did the 650 fall BELOW the 750/850. And no way was it only the Rebel of its day. The 650 definitely belongs in Mid. One other thought: You place the 630 above the 620 in your chart. Canon USA wasn't so sure. The model numbers put the 630 in between the 650 and 620. The debate at the time was whether the higher flash sync speed of the 620 was more important to pros and advanced amateurs than the predictive AF of the 630. So I'd definitely put both the 630 and 620 in the same category, and the 650 only one column below. My 2 cents worth.
Bob Meyer 22/05/2001 14:45:53

Thank you to all who contributed. I moved the EOS 620 and 650 from "Mid" & "Entry" to "High" and "Mid" respectively.

Apropos of the 650/620/600 debate I'll throw my 2 penn'orth into the ring. I bought a 650 in 1988 when it was still very much the current camera, and yes it was regarded aa 'the best of the best' at that time. Not a pro camera, although I did see pros using it - not journalistic pros, but many other bread-and-butter pros, eg people taking pictures of houses, interiors for brochures, etc. I still have that 650. I didn't get a 620 because that camera was indeed more expensive, and also because it lacked the Depth Mode which I thought was rather cool. The 600 came along a couple of years later and was regarded as a very fine camera indeed, but because the EOS range had been around for a couple of years by then it didn't have quite the glamour or excitement that the 650/620 duo had.

Now I'm using a 600 and still have the 650 to hand. There's no doubt that the AF on the 600 is much better than on the 650, there's much less hunting. I've done numerous side-by-side comparisons, and the 600 is simply surer and faster. The 600 also adds some 620 features - AEB and Program Shift - while retaining the Depth Mode from the 650. Flash sync & top shutter speed are 650 standard, not 620. And there are some PIC modes (awkward to use - I don't bother) and some custom functions which I do use, eg full film leader rewind.

Objectively the 600 is a better instrument than the 650, in some ways considerably better. But there's no doubt that *at the time* the 650 was seen a a truly ground-breaking camera, and perhaps it's retained some of that glamour; whereas the 600 never acquired that aura.

I think you got the IX and IX7 (IX Lite) mixed up, IX is a midrange/prosumer camera and IX7 is entry level. Also, IX at the time was quite expensive, IX7 was a lot cheaper when released.

I just replaced my EOS 50 with an EOS 55. The foam near the shutter had detoriated, from not being in use for two years probably, and was sticking to the shutter. I'm wondering about the EOS 55, is that is it a later production model than the 50? I have the half silver 'other' market version.
Abido 11/23/2003 9:54:16 PM

The EOS 55 and the EOS 50 are essentially the same camera and had the same production run dates. You may be able to get an EOS 50/55 built as late as 2000, or one 5 years older.

If the shutter had some gunk on it, it was probably the shutter bump rubber (or what's left of it). Unlike some rubber, which hardens with age, the bump rubber softens and turns to goo, eventually coating your shutter blades and causing intermittent mis-firing and eventual failure of the shutter mechanism. The part is cheap ($5 or so) but the repair is expensive due to the extensive disassembly required to replace it.

Dani 4/4/2004 4:01:07 PM

I think you've got the APS film models flipped in categories. The EOS IX should be in the "mid" section as it is basically an EOS 50 with APS film format.
The EOS IX7 should be the "basic" model as it is made of plastic and is more "automated" than the IX.
The IX is a solid stainless steel job that is a masterpiece of manufacturing. Too bad the APS film format got nuked by digital before it really got going.
The IX7 is unbelievably compact and way too cute. Canon should have used the IX7 body for its digital SLRs. It's not like they need extra room for FILM in there!

Great site, I have just bought a cheap EOS RT. Thanks to you I have managed to piece together a 600/630 operations manual. Along with www.mir.com who also have some excellent EOS bits. The last part of the puzzle, i.e the RT custom functions I managed to find via google. And yes my LCD illumination is stuffed, but at £45.00 for the body I can't complain. I own a 50e & a 55QD, as well, by comparison the RT is built like a tank! But then they seem better built than the 30 which ousted them.
RT info seems a little thin on the ground, which is partly why I wanted to try one. I will post my experiences with the beast later, although I doubt if I will tell you anything you don't already know.
It has been worth buying the camera for all the great EOS sites & links I've discovered. Compatability with my Metz 40mz3i flashgun will be interesting. This will normally work with anything, given the right module. Now there's a manual thats needs de-ciphering!
Keep on trucking anyway, now that digital sweeps all before it, there's an even greater need for info on second-hand film cameras, bought for use!

What about 1Ds Mark II, it's missing from your EOS body list, though it looks it's sold in your "Americas" as well, see http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=10598
