RS-60E3 Remote Switch

by Julian Loke

Contents

Introduction

Button The RS-60E3 Remote Switch can be used to release the shutter up to 0.6 m (2 ft) away from a compatible EOS camera, such as the EOS 50, EOS 30, EOS 500, EOS 300, late model Elan and REBEL series. It is electrically parallel to the shutter release button on the camera body, and therefore operates without transferring vibration from the photographer's hand. The lock-down feature is the only additional function provided by the RS-60E3 that is not available on the main camera body.

Check your specific camera manual for compatibility information, since similar models in different markets may have different features. (e.g. EOS 50 Elan 7E )

Operation

Cap

Locate on the camera body the socket for the remote release. This is usually near the hand grip, but may differ for your particular model of camera.

Remove the small black plastic cap and put it in safe storage. The cap can be plugged temporarily into the round hole at the bottom of the RS-60E3. Unfortunately, the cap can be dislodged easily and is frequently lost.

Connection

First check the the RS-60E3 is not locked down. If you see a red line, slide the latch to cover the line and release the lock. Switch your camera OFF or L, then push the plug of the RS-60E3 all the way into the socket. If the camera is ON, the shutter can sometimes fire as the RS-60E3 is being plugged in or removed.

Release

Button Setup for your shot by positioning your camera and lens on a tripod, and checking your composition. If you cannot be sure that a subject will be covered by an autofocus point, use manual focus instead.

When you are ready to shoot, Switch your camera ON, then use the button the RS-60E3 just as you would the shutter button on the camera body. Half-press is usually used for metering, while depressing the button fully releases the shutter.

Lock-Down

Lock-downFor situations where you want to keep the button depressed, such as continuous shooting, or BULB mode exposures, push and hold the release button. Engage the lock by sliding the plastic latch forward, revealing a red line. To unlock, slide the latch to cover the red line.

Extension

If cable for the RS-60E3 is too short, it is possible to buy or make an extension cord. The electrical requirements are for three conductors, and physically compatible 2.5mm stereo mini-plug and socket. For example:

Cellular phone 6 ft headset extension cable

Using 2.5 mm-to-3.5  adapters and stereo headphone extension cable for 3.5 mm plugs and sockets.

Excellent job! Very thorough documentation and clear images.

Thanks Spiderman,

Spyderman used stolen pictures from EOSdoc for his website. He deserves no credit for originality or
ethics.

I m sorry. I didn t mean to be rude or unethic. I used the 4 pictures only because I didnt dave a digicam or any other camera other than mine to take some pictures of my own camera.

I d also like to mention that I put a link to this site on my site and publicly admitted using your photos.

thats exactly what I was looking for !

cheers ! ;)

Spiderman, I don't see any problem using EOS MANUAL pictures to promote EOS CAMERAS. Don't worry about that.
By the way, I think this is a good tool to control the camera remotely.

Euclides Rodríguez
EUCLIDES 7/10/2004 10:32:37 PM

No matter what Euclides or anyone thinks, the rights to the pictures are with the creator. If Spyderman had asked first, permission would have probably been given for web reuse. If Spyderman was truly concerned about promoting EOS awareness, he could have contributed some documents for the EOSdoc project.

EOSdoc content is protected so that unscrupulous people do not have the right to copy and edit the material and sell it or derivative works as their own.

I made my RS60E3 40ft. extention from web instructions and it works great. Why did Canon not make one for sale, the could have asked for a high price and would still have sold many. Just how much use is a remote switch with a length of 2ft, yes it helps with camera shake but so does the RC-1. Remote to me means more than just 2 ft.
Craig Robinson 10/22/2004 4:32:36 PM

This one main purpose is for using in the bulb mode. The RC-1 does not lock the shutter. Many cool shot can be taken using the bulb mode and you surely do not want your camera to shake in these conditions.

mbrouillard 2/2/2005 6:48:39 PM

mbrouillard is wrong. The RC-1 can indeed operate a compatible camera in BULB mode. The first press opens the shutter, while the second press closes the shutter.

Can anyone please do a step by step diagram showing how to make an extension lead for the RS-60E3. I have no real electronis experience and i have just bought a 2.5mm male and a 2.5mm female socket to try and make one .... useless!! Wont work no matter what i do to it. If anyone can either mentor me via email, or stick a basic wiring diagram / walk through talk through then i would be most grateful.

email mail@bickerton-flyers.co.uk
Many thanks in advance and sorry for the 'newbie' thread

(no, I'm not connected to this shop. I just googled a little)

a related project that can be adapted to the canon protocol easily enough:

I've found a 6 foot extension cord for the RS-60E3 remote. It works great for my digital Rebel XT. I've even plugged three of them together for a total of 18 feet of extension. The extension cord plugs into your camera and then you plug the remote into that. If you're interested, I will sell you one brand new in the package for $10.00 plus shipping.

I've been trying to make one of these for my Canon 400D. I have all of the materials in place but I can't seem to activate the shutter. Auto-focus works a treat. Is there a clearer example of how to wire this? I think my main problem (besides being an electronics nOOb) is that I don't know which of the three connectors coming from the female jack input do what. There's two short ones either side of one long one.. but what's what? Right now I'm just testing the circuitry by manually pressing the wires together, though I do have switches ready to solder once I get the circuit working. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
